Halfway Responds To Vehicle Roll-Over On Virginia Ave
February 10, 2022
On the afternoon of February 10th, Halfway units were clearing a call on Sherman Avenue when Washington County received reports of a serious accident on Virginia Avenue. A car and pick-up truck had collided at the intersection of Virginia Avenue and Marion Street just two blocks from Company 26 units. Crews cleared the scene on Sherman and responded to the call as units from Hagerstown were being dispatched on the call with our Medic from Halfway. Engine 26-1 immediately cleared the call on Sherman and responded to assist.
Chief Ernst arrived to find a two-vehicle accident with roll-over. Chief Ernst reported one entrapment and one ejection and requested an additional ALS Unit and BLS Unit to the scene. Chief Ernst established Virginia Avenue Command until the arrival of the on-duty Battalion Chief from Hagerstown Fire Department could arrive. Engine 10-1 from Funkstown was still in the area from the Sherman Avenue Incident and responded in to assist. While EMS tended to the ejection, firefighters off Engine 26-1 and Engine 10-1 were able to work together with assistance from Captain 13 from Maugansville Fire Company to extricate the patient from the silver vehicle. Command reported extrication complete at 16:27 at which time Command was also passed to Hagerstown Battalion 3.
Virginia Avenue remained shut down for two more hours once all patients were tended too. Battalion Chief 3 held City Truck 4 and Engine 10-1 until all hazards were able to be removed. The ejected and entrapped patients were both transported to Meritus Medical Center listed as Priority 2 Category B Traumas. The occupant of the pick-up struck was also transported with non-life-threatening injuries. Halfway responded on the call with Western Enterprise HFD Station 4 units, Funkstown Volunteer Fire Company Co.10, Community Rescue Service Co.75, and Washington County EMS1811. Maryland State Police Aviation Division Trooper 3 was started, but ground units opted to transport by ground and was canceled.
