


Halfway Responds To Hazerdous Materials Incident Box 26-8

On the evening of March 22nd, Halfway was alerted for a Hazardous Materials Incident at the Pilot Travel Center off Halfway Boulevard. Washington County had reports of a truck hauling Peroxyacetic Acid and Hydrogen Peroxide leaking. Crews arrived to find a Tractor Trailer sitting at the fuel island leaking a fluid from the truck. The driver supplied firefighters with his manifest confirming the chemicals that were involved. Upon investigation by the county Hazmat Team, it was confirmed that crews were dealing with 6 50 gallon barrels that had become compromised. It took crews nearly two and a half hours to bring the leak under control.
The back lot at the Pilot Travel Center was shut down for several hours while Maryland Department of Environment worked to conduct clean-up operations. No injuries were reported during the incident. Halfway Fire Company received assistance from Funkstown Fire Company, Williamsport Fire Company, Hagerstown Fire Department, Hancock Fire Company, Community Rescue Service, Washington County Division of Emergency Services, Washington County Air & Rehab, and Washington County Fire Police.
