Halfway Responds on Vehicle Accident With Entrapment

On the morning of April 13TH, Halfway crews were alerted for a Personal Injury Accident with Funkstown Rescue Squad 10 a Medic Unit out of Williamsport Fire & EMS and an ALS Supervisor out of Community Rescue. Units were dispatched out at 07:58 to the area of the Washington County Board of Education in the 10400 block of Downsville Pike. Washington County ECC had reports of possible entrapments on dispatch. Medic 26-9 arrived to find two vehicles with one entrapment.

Engine 26-1 arrived to find a Prius and a Hyundai in the roadway. Lieutenant Smothers on Engine 26-1 established Downsville Pike Command and began evaluating the scene for hazards. After her evaluation of the scene, Lieutenant Smothers advised two patients for check-up, one still entrapped in the vehicle. Williamsport Medic 2-9 arrived and began evaluating one patient while Medic 26-9 worked to assist with the entrapped patient that they categorized as a Priority 2 Category “D” trauma patient. Firefighters were able to extricate the patient within 17 minutes of their arrival on the scene.

Firefighters assisted Medic 26-9 with patient packaging once extracted and transported them to Meritus Medical Centers Trauma Team while Medic 2-9 evaluated the other patient who decided they did not want transported to the hospital and signed off on a Patient Refusal. With Fire Department Operations Complete, Lieutenant Smother terminated Command and began releasing units. Washington County Fire Police remained on the scene to assist Maryland State Police until all vehicles were able to be removed from the roadway.
