Halfway Responds Friday Night On Working Fire In Hagerstown

On the evening of February 4, 2022, crew from the Hagerstown Fire Department was alerted for a structure fire at 331 South Potomac Street on Box 3-1-4-5. Units responded at 22:09 hours as additional calls came into Washington 911 reporting possible entrapments. Battalion Chief Hopkins could see flames showing as he approached the scene and immediately requested the Safety Assignment. Chief Hopkins arrived reporting fire showing on the first floor with reports of multiple entrapments on the first and third floors.

The Volunteer Fire Company of Halfway was alerted on the Safety Assignment and responded with Engine 26-1 with a crew of 4. HFD crews went to work conducting an aggressive attack as other crews began searching the building for victims as additional units were responding in on the Safety Assignment. Firefighters were able to conduct a quick knock on the fire within five minutes while all searches came up negative for victims. Command reported Fire Under Control at 22:23 hours. With the fire under control, Halfway Engine 261 was able to clear the scene and return to service.

Hagerstown units remained committed on the scene for several hours assisting the Hagerstown Fire Marshal’s Office. All the occupants of the building were able to self-extricate themselves out the back of the building as Fire Departments units were arriving. No injuries were reported during the incident and the American Red Cross was called to the scene to assist those displaced by the blaze. The cause of the blaze is currently under investigation by the Hagerstown Fire Marshal’s Office.
