January 15, 2025
Seven vehicles damaged in fire at Maryland Hyundai dealership
The Maryland fire marshal's office is investigating the cause of an accidental vehicle fire at Massey Hyundai on Wednesday that, with the aid of wind, spread to six other vehicles, Deputy State Fire Marshal Mark Grove said Thursday.
The National Weather Service recorded wind gusts of 21 mph at Hagerstown Regional Airport, farther north, at 11:53 a.m. and at 12:53 p.m. on Wednesday, according to weather.gov.
Two of the damaged vehicles belonged to customers who had their vehicles at the 1702 Massey Blvd. dealership for repairs, Grove said. The other five vehicles are owned by the Massey Hyundai.
None of the involved vehicles were hybrid or electric vehicles.
Grove characterized the fire as an "extreme anomaly."
The exact cause of the fire was not known Thursday morning. Grove said he is waiting for engineers with Hyundai expertise, through Hyundai and the insurance company, to begin their investigation and aid the fire marshal's office.
Massey Hyundai officials could not be reached for comment late Wednesday or early Thursday.
The fire occurred shortly after noon Wednesday at the dealership that is near Halfway and Wesel boulevards.
The estimated loss from the damaged vehicles is $300,000, according to a news release from the fire marshal's office.
Eleven firefighters responded, with the primary fire company being Volunteer Fire Co. of Halfway. It took them about 5 minutes to control the fire.
An employee discovered the fire in the engine compartment of one of the vehicles.
