WILLIAMSPORT- After multiple fire companies were called out to a papermill near Williamsport, Maryland, the Maryland Office of the State Fire Marshal is continuing to investigate the incident.
Calls came in around 3:38pm from the Maryland Paper building in the 16100 block of Elliott Parkway in Williamsport for an exterior fire. Fire companies from Williamsport, Longmeadow, Halfway, and numerous others were called out to the blaze. Taking about two hours to finally extinguish and 85 firefighters in total, the blaze caused about $20,000 worth of damage, per investigators.
Fire Marshals say that the blaze started in the scrap/pulp paper waste area outside of the main mill and was accidental in nature, caused by improperly discarded smoking materials. That fire quickly spread, they say, from to the cardboard bales and two trailers parked against the nearby dock. It additionally caused minor damage to the roof of the main building.
