Halfway Assists On Accident Involving MSP Trooper On I-70

May 11, 2021

On the morning of May 11th, Halfway and Williamsport units were operating on and fuel spill on Interstate 70 East Bound just east of Interstate 81 with Washington County Hazmat 20 when crews noticed a Tractor Trailer off the road in the median just west of their incident. Upon investigation, crews found that a Maryland State Trooper, who was trying to slow down traffic for their incident, was struck from behind by a tractor-trailer. Personnel off of Engine 261 responded to the scene on foot to assist while Williamsport Fire’s Engine 21 re-positioned their unit at the accident scene.

Crews had a Maryland State Trooper who was struck from behind by a tractor-trailer causing the vehicle to spin around striking a second SUV with a family of four in it. Units on the scene were able to determine no injuries in the SUV struck by the Troopers vehicle or the tractor-trailer involved. The State Trooper was transported to Meritus Medical Center by Halfway EMS as a Priority 2 Category C trauma due to the high velocity impact of the accident.

The interstate was shut down for over an hour while wrecking crews worked to clear all hazards from the scene and Maryland State Police Accident Investigators worked to determine what caused the accident. Traffic was able to be re-directed down the collector lane around the incident to keep delays to a minimum. No information has been released in reference to the investigation being handled by Maryland State Police.
