Halfway assisted in paying tribute to Milton A. “Butch” Bloom III

January 29, 2022

On January 29th, the Volunteer Fire Company of Halfway assisted in paying tribute to Milton A. “Butch” Bloom III of the Leitersburg Fire Company. Butch was an active firefighter of 56 years with Leitersburg who died in the line of duty at Waynesboro Hospital. On the evening of December 29th, 2021, President Bloom was transported to Waynesboro Hospital by a medic unit from Smithsburg EMS with general weakness, dehydration and low-grade fever. Upon arrival to the hospital, President Bloom was admitted and subsequently diagnosed with COVID pneumonia. Butch later passed on Wednesday, January 19 2022.

Butch was the current President of the Fire Company at Leitersburg and was the most active volunteer Leitersburg had with 421 calls in 2021 out of 499 calls for service. He has been a dedicated member of the Fire Company since joining in 1965. Butch held numerous elected positions through that time including Captain, Deputy Fire Chief, Fire Chief, and President. He served a term as Vice President of the Washington County Volunteer Fire and Rescue Association and also as the chief delegate for Leitersburg Fire Company.

Halfway was honored to assist Leitersburg during their time of need and be there to give Butch the proper send off he deserved. He was active in the community and extremely active in his Fire Department running well over 5,000 calls during his 56 years of service. Our thoughts and prayers continue to be with Butch’s family on their loss and our brothers and sisters at Leitersburg as they move forward from this tragic loss of a great man!
